About two months ago, the Holy Spirit revealed through Prophet Graham that He wanted us as a church to fast for 40 days. The purpose behind the fast was so that we may be set free from the things that held us back in our walk with God and to break every yoke that God has not called us to carry. The Holy Spirit immediately convicted me that He wanted to break the bondage of fear in my life and that I needed to fast certain foods.

Isaiah 58:6 “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To lose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?

Growing up in South Africa I saw many lions in the wild and came to understand that if a lion attacks you, then you should never turn your back on the lion or try to run away. When a 400 pound lion comes running towards you to bring you down, then our natural reaction is to turn and run. By running, the lion, which can run faster than any human, will see you as easy prey. The only way to survive a lion attack is to stand your ground, and to continue facing the lion. A lion will often back off if you do so.

The devil is not a lion, but he pretends to be one, trying to invoke fear in us in order to kill steal and destroy our lives. 1 Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." The devil is a defeated foe and the only power he has is to speak lies. When we believe them it can cause fear to set into our lives.

There were areas in my life in which I was experiencing fear. In the past my reaction to circumstances that trigger fear in me was to panic, try and get out of the situation (to run).

God gave the following strategy to overcome fear:

  • God wanted me to face my fears in order for me to discover that they cannot harm me. He was asking me to do the things that I feared doing.
  • Also he wanted me to stand. The way he wanted me to do it was to stand on the truth of the word in the midst of feeling fearful. The word of God is a true and sure foundation. It’s what we use to defeat the lies of the enemy in our lives.

God gave me this scripture to stand on: Romans 8:14-17 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” Through this scripture God was showing me that now that I am His son, it is not in my nature to fear anymore. I am now able to throw fear off.

I am grateful for this time of fasting. I have seen God accomplish much in me and in the rest of the church. He showed me the way to overcome fear. And by applying these principals I am able to see continual victory in this area of my life. All glory to God!
